For many, attaining success is the ultimate goal.
But success is so hard to measure or quantify because it means so many different things to so many different people.
So I've replaced the word success in my vocabulary with the word victory because for me victory means going forth in excellence and winning the highest honor.
I don't mean winning in a competitive way but more so in a fulfilling way where everyone wins.
In preparation to appear on the Victorious Voice Radio Show the host, Brooks J Young, sent me some interview questions. One question in particular stood out and has resonated with me ever since. She asked,
"What are 3 main things to watch out for when striving to reach victory?"
This was my answer...
1. Your Words-The power of life and death is in the tongue. Not only could negative talk be detrimental to those listening, but it is harmful to the person who is speaking them. Many of the things that we are living now are manifestations of what we have spoken in the past.
2. Your Actions-You never know who is watching you and aspiring to be just like you. Use that influence for good and not evil.
3. Your Intentions-Make sure that your intentions have the best interest of yourself and others at heart. Most gifted speakers and writers have the gift of persuasion which when misused can turn into the curse of manipulation.
Let me elaborate...
As a person who has been blessed with the gift of influence, you are always being watched. You have the gift of influence if you are a parent, teacher, older sibling, mentor, or if you are simply one of those people that just has the "It Factor."
Having the "It Factor" means that there is just something about you that draws people to you. You simply enter a room and your presence is felt.
When I say that you are being watched, I mean that people look to you to see what they should do.
I learned that I had the gift of influence when I was at a point in my life where I was making poor choices and the people around me began to follow suit.
It was at that point that I realized that I needed to start using that gift for good and not evil.
Influential people also have the gift of persuasion. It is for that very reason that they must closely watch their intentions. The gift of persuasion can be a powerful catalyst for change, but when misused, it can easily become manipulation.
Finally, if people are always watching you, then they are most certainly listening too. This is why it is so important that we watch our words. Here are some examples...
When it comes to how your words affect others, consider this...
If a mother constantly tells her son, "You are just like your no good daddy!!" After hearing it so many times, in so many ways, I can guarantee that her son will become just that.
When it comes to how our words affect ourselves, consider this...
I wrote a poem called 'Fat'. It talks about how I kept saying, I'm fat, I'm fat, I need to lose weight, and things of that nature....before I knew what happened, I had gained 30 pounds and when I looked back at pictures dated to when I began saying it, I was not fat at all. So, more important than watching what we eat is...watching what we speak!
When you are striving for victory watch your words, your actions and your intentions. You never know who is watching or listening.
Now, will you use your gift of influence for good or evil?
