Squashing Rumors on Twitter

Letitia Wright

Recently a music star went to Twitter to confront rumors that she was pregnant. Twitter is great to use for that. It goes out to all your followers and media can easily pick it up and begin to write an article. They can also request you for an interview. Twitter is considered social media and can keep any subject alive for a long period of time. In the interview she (of course it's a she) mentioned that she is working on a music CD for next year. This means she needs to find a way to be in the media for year. Twitter can keep that conversation going for a long time.

This same star spent years telling people she was married to her daughter's father, when if fact she was not. When they split up, he went to the media, doing a lot of interviews and telling people he was never married to her and that she insisted they say there were married because she was embarrassed for being pregnant and unmarried. I remember the shock when it hit the media. People talked about it for a long time and she went on Oprah to say she was sorry for being dishonest. Now she is asking the media to believe her again.

Your reputation can be won and lost in both media and traditional media. It's great to confront that rumor on Twitter, however she needs to work on putting new information out there about what she is doing. She could talk about the new CD; she could talk about her recent stint on a dancing show. She could have a book ghost written to take advantage of her spotlight. When the spot is on you unexpectedly, you can take advantage of it in many ways. There are wasted possibilities here for good publicity. She also needs to create a reputation of telling the truth. It will take time for the public to trust her again. The public is fickle. You have to work the attention you are getting while it's still a hot item. If you can sit back and look at the situation without being emotional, you can turn any situation around in the media. Remember that publicity is a tool. You can use it for yourself or let the media use it for you. You will have better results if you are assertive about the publicity surrounding you and your business.
