Money Matters for Youth with Gail Perry-Mason (GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE!)

MONEY MATTERS FOR YOUTH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                                                                              &nb sp;                                     Media Contact: Gail Perry-Mason

NATIONAL FINANCIAL EXPERT TEACHES KIDS MONEY COLLEGE AT WCCCD SUMMER CAMP

Metro Detroit youth, ages 8 to 18, can now enroll in summer Money College , to be taught by Gail Perry-Mason, Senior Director of Investments at the Detroit office of Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. She co-authored Girl, Make Your Money Grow! – A featured book on the Oprah Show and now recommended reading on Oprah.com. Perry-Mason, who has coached more than 3000 Detroit area youth, will teach children the keys to wealth building. "Parents are thrilled because, when children learn the true value of money and giving back, they become as excited about saving as they had been about spending," she says. "Kids are like Kodak film. All they need is exposure and development."

Perry-Mason, a team of financial coaches – some of them former students - and local entrepreneurs, will lead the students through a five-day interactive experience, which includes workshops on:

  • Financial literacy, budgeting, economic principles, and business etiquette
  • Credit, debt, student loans, scholarships
  • Personal banking, checking and savings accounts, and debit cards
  • Wall Street, the Wall Street Journal and stock exchange literacy
  • Time management
  • Starting your own business, business plans and product promotion
  • The importance of giving back
  • Investing in our health/self-care

The summer camp will operate as a business. Students will be divided into working groups of investment clubs. The students are divided up into groups: Small Cap (elementary school); Mid Cap (middle school); Large Cap (high school). They must adhere to a dress code that requires shirts and ties for gentlemen and dresses for young ladies. Caps, jeans and gym shoes are banned. The youth will take research field trips to area business and financial institutions.

The curriculum also features business etiquette lessons, to provide youth with the informal skills needed to capitalize on their new business knowledge. The social skills developed include the firm handshake, dining etiquette and interviewing skills.

Students are also exposed to community service, as a component of healthy wealth. "We don't want to raise a generation of youth who believe everything of value is for sale. Some of the most valuable aspects of life are simply what we give," Perry-Mason explains.

Money Matters Youth Camp is a partnership of WCCCD and the Entrepreneurial Institute and Resource Center , sponsored by State Farm Insurance and Bank of America.

Philanthropists Foster Healing for Domestic Violence Survivors

The Southfield Community Foundation announces the 5th Annual Women's Fund Tea on May 1, 2011 at the Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield from 3:30 PM to 5:30PM.  The keynote speaker is Jaycee Memminger, an advocate and Domestic Violence Survivor. Memminger will speak on the challenges of "Moving Beyond the Tears". Memminger's struggle with domestic violence and near fatal attack was featured on Fox 2 News.

Last year's sold out event, is an indication of the growth and commitment of the Women's Fund. The Women's Fund committee will continue to focus on issues of domestic violence in their grant award decisions for 2011. The Fund previously partnered with Haven in an Abuse is Not Love campaign to provide information about assistance programs for women in abusive relationships. The Southeastern Michigan Assistance League was provided with Assault Survivor Kits for women. Partnerships this year will include: The Southfield Domestic Violence Group, the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, and Southfield Public Schools.  Through auctions and sponsorships that include Fifth Third Bank, Michigan First Credit Union, St. John Providence Hospital, Comerica Bank and Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss, the fund will award grants to aid domestic violence victims. Women's Fund Chairperson Janie Fulton states, "Victims of sexual assault or abuse are often asked to provide their clothing for evidence. Assault Survivor Kits include new clothing and personal hygiene items, providing both a sense of dignity to the victim and an understanding that they are not alone."

The goal of the Women's Fund is to mobilize philanthropy to meet the needs of those dealing with issues of domestic violence in Southfield and Lathrup Village.  "The mission of the Southfield Community Foundation is to enhance the lives of those who live and work in the Southfield and Lathrup Village communities. We are proud to have the Women's Fund as part of our charitable funds", said Raquel R. Robinson, Executive Director.

The cost of the 5th Annual Women's Fund Tea is $40.00. Click here to reserve your seat or visit our website at   www.scfmi.org.  Please reserve seats in advance, as space is limited.  For sponsorship information, please call 248-327-6125.

Spring Forward in 40 Days!... My Girlfriend's Business... via @jillblackwell

Welcome to the first edition of My Girlfriends' Business Newsletter

What is My Girlfriends' Business (MGB)?

My Girlfriends' Business is a network of women business owners who come together to pray for, partner with and promote other women business owners who know and love God!

What do we do?
On March 1, 2011, we took a 31-Day Advance called "Take Care of Your Business" where we met every morning at 5AM (EST) to pray for a particular topic and received an assignment related to that topic.

(Some of the ladies who participated in the 31-Day Advance)

For example, our first topic and assignment was REPENT. Repent to God and those you had wronged in your personal and professional lives. Needless to say, this was a challenging assignment for many of us because we had to face situations and circumstances that we would otherwise like to forget about. But we are reminded that God can not bless you beyond your obedience.

I personally struggled with this assignment because there was one particular person I did not want to deal with or apologize to. I eventually was obedient (on day 31 at 4:49AM - right before we started the last call) and sent her a sincere apology via text message. She was very receptive and we have both moved on! Thank God!

WHAT'S NEXT?
During our Celebration and Networking event on Thursday, March 31, 2011, we announced our next challenge "SPRING FORWARD IN 40 DAYS"

WHAT IS SPRING FORWARD IN 40 DAYS?
During Spring Forward in 40 Days, you will become a part of a "team" designed to help you start, expand and grow your business, first through prayer, then through partnership and lastly through strategic markeing and promotions.

If you've ever thought about starting a business, what's holding you back? If you're unemployed, do you trust God enough that he can help you find ways to create an income for yourself — even while you're job hunting? If you already have a business, you can get re-energized through prayer, partnership and learn new success strategies.

In the next 40 days, we will challenge you to change your life and increase both your knowledge and your confidence in yourself and in God -- both are key to springing forward into the best life God has for you!

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will gain skills in goal setting, leadership, communication, team building, accountability, responsibility, business money management, entrepreneurship, marketing and more.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE CHALLENGE?
