Maker Faire Detroit Event Guide

In this newsletter you will find our Maker Faire Detroit Event Guide  that will be inserted in this weeks Metro Times Paper.

Check out the attractions, speakers, maps and Faire highlights!

What to expect from Maker Faire

"Maker Faire offers a feast for people of all ages who love good learning: it's authentic, inspiring and satisfying," Maker Faire founder Dale Dougherty wrote in a recent essay. "One day, perhaps, we'll see a Maker Revolution that changes what we're trying to do in our schools and our communities, replacing education with good learning."

A Few Maker Faire Detroit 2011 Highlights

First-time Michigan makers include Phillip McRoberts from Macomb and his Robbie the Robot, a roving 5-foot-tall webcam robot that streams video and audio; the Green Girl Scouts from Birmingham who turn trash into treasure like neckties into sunglasses, old magazines into gift bows and old belts into bracelets; Detroit artists Kristine Diven and Micho Detronik of District VII and their Mannequin Forest, an artificial forest of mannequins, circuitry and interaction; i3Detroit's John Sugg and his Atari 2600-turned-synthesizer keyboard; and Rick Erickson of Niles and his Michiana Shanty 2, a folding portable shelter for extreme cold conditions and more.

It wouldn't be Maker Faire without some Faire favorites: The LifeSize Mousetrap, the Coke and Mentos guys, the Hackerspace areas, Handmade Detroit, and the make-and-take Marshmallow Shooters. And don't forget about the food -- along with the selection from The Henry Ford's award-winning culinary team, ticketholders can visit the booths of Sweet Sass Foods from Livonia, Doodle's Sugarbush from Blanchard, Genesis Tea from Detroit, Naturally Nutty Foods from Traverse City, Treat Dreams from Ferndale and so much more!

Special event(s) happening: Ignite comes to Detroit

Ignite Great Lakes, the first-ever regional Ignite event, is coming to Detroit in honor of Maker Faire.

On Saturday evening (7/30), after Maker Faire Detroit, you can enjoy an amazing Ignite program at the Fillmore Detroit .  Building on the success of 30+ local Ignites in Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, and throughout the Great Lakes region, Ignite Great Lakes will feature 12-15 of the best presentations from the Midwest.

The evening is free, and to register, go to:  ignitegreatlakes.eventbrite.com

Food Friday: Top Meal Planning Apps and Websites via @wisebread #labw

My favorite website @wisebread has yet again come out with another great article on time saving methods for the busy single mother.

I don't know if you know this but Cooking is a bane in my side. Since this is an open diary about loving me and knowing what it takes to love me, I want you to know, I hate to cook. On top of that, I can only cook four good meals:

1. Turkey Spaghetti
2. Boiled Eggs
3. Belgium Waffles
4. Cabbage

I know that's not a lot to choose from and for a black woman, you'd expect more soul things like fried or a barbque item. NOPE!!!

Some friends have said maybe I should take a cooking class. Why? It would make me a better cook, but it wouldn't make me like being in the kitchen. LOL.

So I hope to find a man that likes to cook or rich enough to buy me a great housemaid because I also hate cleaning, straightening up and other household work.

I hope you enjoy WiseBread's article as much as I did

July 2011

 Hello Everyone!

It is with heavy heart that we prepare this newsletter. The world was rocked by the passing of Mia Amber Davis, Plus super model, Plus rights advocate and the face of the Expo and the Network for the past 2 years.  I have been hard pressed to find the words to describe what she meant to me and to this organization. Speaking of her in the past tense is something that has proved very difficult for me.

Thanks so much to everyone who has reached out to us to express their condolences for her loss, many who had the opportunity to see her every year at the Fuller Woman Expo. We have all come together in a way that I have never seen before. Thank you for being there for the people in your circle and reaching out to someone through your social networks.

Her courage and dedication to the movement was as remarkable as her beauty. We have to turn this devastating loss into a call to action, to continue to hold the torch that she held for the plus community. Join us as we celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman during the Expo!
