BOOK: Real-Life Madam Offers Behind the Scenes Look at Sex for Money in the 21st Century
THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM is a memoir of a madam that explores how the internet took prostitution off the street corner and into every suburban home in America.
Real-Life Madam Offers Behind the Scenes Look at Sex for Money in the 21st Century THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM By Ma-Ling Lee
"A businesslike, astute and self-empowering look at the sex business…[Lee] presents her career in remarkably transparent, direct terms." – Publishers Weekly
In 2004 the New York Times ran an article called "Call Girls, Updated" about technology and the sex industry. "There are no official gauges of the sex industry, but if the Manhattan Yellow Pages is any guide, it is thriving, with more than 30 pages under the heading 'escorts.' (By comparison, there are fewer than half as many pages devoted to psychologists, plumbers or real estate brokers.)" The article went on to describe a specific agency based out of New Jersey. THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM (Scribner, January 2009, $24.00) is the story of the woman behind this very same agency.
Born in Korea in the mid-1970s and adopted at the age of six by an American family, Ma-Ling (a pseudonym) began running away from home at the age of 13. At 15, she was dancing at a strip club. "Taken in" by a nefarious cast of characters, Ma-Ling received the bulk of her education from pimps, prostitutes, strippers, and drug dealers, learning basic life skills like cooking and paying bills as well as how to negotiate the streets. With a natural knack for marketing and managing a business, Ma-Ling opened her first brothel at 16. After the police shut her down, Ma-Ling knew it was time to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the anonymity of the Internet; she purchased her first e-mail list and set up an off-shore server, building a huge, previously untapped clientele in a matter of weeks. The first prostitution book with a business angle, THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM reveals how the Internet, cell phones, and other emerging technology have not only revolutionized the sex industry, but have regulated business—ensuring quality, safety and efficiency: "If a new girl wants to work for me, she can e-mail me pictures and I can check reviews of her past work online. No one ever needs to know what I look like or even where I am in order to do business with me…I could be living and working right next door to you and you wouldn't even know it." The Internet has taken the sex industry off the streets and brought it to every computer, den, and office in America.
Additionally, THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM offers answers to age-old questions about men and prostitution. "People outside the industry ask me questions…all the time—why do guys take such stupid risks?—especially if the…guys in question are married. The truth is, if these guys wanted to f**k the same girl time and time again, they'd just get mistresses…the point for many of them is that they just want to be around someone who isn't going to judge them for a little while…sometimes they just want something uncomplicated, where the outcome is practically assured." Or how about the question of what sort of man patronizes an escort agency? "Most of them are hardworking professionals like doctors (the most common, at least for Ma-Ling)…lawyers, executives…They all have cash to spare and things to lose." And – of course – the freaky types: "There was this one guy…who never wanted to have sex. He just wanted someone to treat him like a baby…He'd bring along a bottle, pacifier, and adult-size diapers, and the girl was supposed to feed, burp, and change him. Whatever."
Complete with an appendix titled "So You Want to Be a Call Girl?", which includes Ma-Ling's employee handbook and glossary (what exactly is a "Half and Half"?), THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM is a newsworthy, tell-all memoir of an extremely savvy businesswoman and a booming business (that shows no sign of slowing).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ma-Ling Lee is from Korea and was adopted at birth by a family in Maine. She ran away from home at 13 and quickly became a stripper, befriending the other strippers who taught her basic life skills. Soon after, she met her first boyfriend, a "hustler," who was into drugs. At the age of 17, having discovered she had a knack for marketing and managing a business, she started a brothel. When the police finally shut it down, she bought her first internet mailing list, set up an off-shore server, and reached a huge, previously untapped clientele. The rest is history.
THE EDUCATION OF A VERY YOUNG MADAM By Ma-Ling Lee with Christa Bourg Scribner; January 6, 2009 224 pages; $24.00

I'm loving this video although I do think it's strange they put the music against clay when he's gay. But the pictures are just inspiring.

Fw: Black Web 2.0 - Study Examines Technology Habits of Black Mothers
Study Examines Technology Habits of Black Mothers Posted: 26 Jan 2009 04:13 PM CST As the battle online over the readership of young Black Women continues to heat up, a recent study released by BSM Media, a South Florida based marketing firm, may shed some light into the interest of Black mothers online. The study, which examines the technology habits of mothers across racial lines, shows some interesting contraindications between women of differing races. According to the study, 85% of the respondents turn to the Internet first when looking for product recommendations and other mom-related parenting advice. The internet was also the top answer among races when asked which piece of technology they couldn't live without, with cell phone coming in a close second for Hispanic moms. The survey also points out while online, African American mothers are more likely to read articles (68%) and experience music (45%), while Caucasian mothers are likely to frequent social networks (45%) and message boards (43%). Hispanic mothers chose Blogs as their top choice (55%) followed by social networks (42%). Reports also points out that blogs are still very popular among all the mothers surveyed with 58% of them naming the media among their favorite forms of content online. As it relates to news and current events, African American moms are interested in political stories (54%) while Caucasian moms are more likely to follow celebrity and entertainment news (44%). African American mothers spend their free time reading (77%), while Caucasian moms are most likely to surf the Internet (77%) and Hispanic moms enjoy spending time with their spouses (78%). Fw: Metro Times Lust Survey
Last year you told us all sorts of things about what goes on between the sheets - not to mention in parked cars, moving cars and restroom stalls; on Central Park swings and Disneyland rides; not to forget that romp behind a coat rack on the sales floor at Sears. More important, you told us about what goes on where sex happens the most: in your heads. You talked about the good and the bad, passed on regrets and notes of celebration. Which is why we're back with our Second Annual Live & Lust Poll. Same deal as last year - be truthful about everything EXCEPT your name and those of any other souls who show up in your answers. What's in it for you - besides contributing to the much-needed erotic wisdom of mankind - is having your e-mail entered in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Noir Leather. We'll publish a wide sampling of the results in this year's Lust Issue, hitting the streets on Feb. 11.

The Joy of Sex
I distinctly remember the pictures of women with leg and arm hair and men with back hair. The majority of the pictures of people were all in one race. Yet I looked past all that and read the words that filled my head with knowledge about something my parents or friends knew nothing about.
At that time, I remember, the book didn't mention much about safe sex. I think there was just a little about it there compared to this version where it's not only spoken about for a while but often mentioned throughout the book.
Things have changed and the new Joy of Sex is wonderful.
The new Joy of Sex (revised by a woman - thank the lawd!) brings sex into the twenty-first century the way it should be. With women becoming equaller (I know that's not a word) out the bed, we still crave that take me, thrill me, please me. But we also love that take charge.
I was pleased by the new illustrations and photos, plus the detailed descriptions. This book would make a wonderful anniversary gift and a great new nuptial gift for all couples.

Fwd: One Year to Find The One
Fwd from: Black Web 2.0
Neenah Pickett’s mission is clear: she will find her husband in 2009. Her website 52 Weeks 2 Find Him! aims to aid her in that pursuit. The 42-year-old New Jersey communications consultant turned to the Web in her search for a spouse because conventional methods have failed (according to her About page). If her plan doesn’t work, she has opted to go dateless in 2010.
Neenah’s site features weekly videos (or “episodes”) on her progression, as well as a discussion board, online polls, a blog, and periodic tips and videos from her friends Traci, Bret, Christine, and Maureen. Neenah’s frequent media appearances are also listed; her story has been featured on Fox News, Essence, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and Good Morning America. Future Mr. Picketts aren’t left out either. There’s even a section for potential suitors to request a date with Neenah, and in the spirit of openness, they even have their own profile sections on the site.
Only time will tell as to whether or not Pickett’s plan will win her a man. A recent post on BlackVoices.com shows several dissenting opinions to Neenah’s site, but I think that this year-long personal ad is an interesting idea. Paid dating website memberships are on the decline with the proliferation of Facebok, MySpace, Flickr, and other social networking tools, and it sounds like other in-person options have not worked out. Pickett’s very public search may supersede the matters of safety and trust, but who knows? She’s not going it alone, and has the whole web as her dating coach. It sounds like she’s already said “I do” instead of “I don’t” in terms of giving this a shot.
What do you think? Is Pickett’s approach going to get her a date, or is it dated?
